If you have been searching through Shudder for something to add a little scare to your seasonal viewing, you may have come across The Haunted Season, a new anthology series from showrunner Kier-La Janisse. The first entry, To Fire You Come at Last, is written and directed by Sean Hogan and follows a group of men haunted by past misdeeds as they carry a coffin to its burial place. To learn more about The Haunted Season, which will bring a new entry to Shudder each year, io9 spoke with Janisse over video chat. Janisse explains the tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, dating back to the Victorian era and how it has influenced her series. The idea for the series came about when Janisse and Sam Zimmerman of Shudder had wanted Hogan to create a ghost story for Christmas years ago. When Hogan made a short film for Janisse, she realized it could be the perfect fit for an ongoing series of ghost stories for Christmas. The film, set on a corpse road, was well-received despite being made in adverse conditions.
