Seorang pria bernama Bombshell memicu pertempuran suksesi di Zimbabwe.

A line of armored personnel tanks moving through a neighborhood in Harare briefly raised concerns of a potential military coup in Zimbabwe. Social media buzzed with questions and speculation, prompting government spokesman Nick Mangwana to reassure the public that the tanks were part of a routine equipment test and not a cause for alarm.

The situation highlighted the current state of the country, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa facing criticism from within his own party for the first time since taking office in 2017. The accusations against him brought back memories of the coup that removed his predecessor, Robert Mugabe, from power.

A senior Zanu-PF member named Blessed Geza, also known as “Bombshell”, openly criticized Mnangagwa and called for his resignation, sparking controversy within the party. This led to Geza being forced into hiding as he faced charges of treason and inciting public violence.

Despite Mnangagwa’s assurance that he would step down in three years, the debate over his potential third term continued, causing division within Zanu-PF and leading to the expulsion of Geza and his supporters. However, political analysts believe that Geza’s actions are unlikely to rally widespread support among Zimbabweans, who are less interested in political upheaval compared to the time of Mugabe’s ousting.

The economic challenges facing the country also contribute to the lack of mobilization for political causes, with splits across the political landscape and a weak opposition. The war veterans, once a powerful force in Zimbabwean politics, are also divided on the issue of Mnangagwa’s potential extended term, further complicating the situation.
