Reported by James FitzGerald and Ana Faguy for BBC News in London and Washington DC, a video has surfaced showing alleged gang members being deported by the US to a prison in El Salvador.
The White House has faced accusations from rights groups for allegedly defying due process by carrying out deportations despite a judge’s order over the weekend. A total of 261 individuals, including 238 alleged Venezuelan gang members and 23 alleged members of the MS-13 gang, were sent to El Salvador. Some were deported under a law not used since World War Two.
Despite a temporary block issued by a judge, the deportations proceeded. The White House argued that the judge’s order was not lawful and was issued after the group had already been deported. The identities and alleged criminal activities of the detainees have not been disclosed by either the US government or El Salvador.
President Trump accused the gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) of posing a threat to the US, citing the Alien Enemies Act from 1798. Critics have raised concerns about the justification for these deportations under this legislation.
A hearing has been scheduled to investigate the Trump administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act. The administration has defended its actions, claiming that the deportees were confirmed gang members based on intelligence.
The deportations have sparked controversy and legal challenges, with critics questioning the constitutionality of the administration’s actions. The ACLU and Amnesty International USA have condemned the deportations as targeting specific groups based on broad claims of gang affiliation.
The Trump administration’s use of a centuries-old law to expedite deportations has raised concerns about due process and civil liberties. The case continues to unfold as legal challenges are mounted against the government’s actions. Dua geng yang ditargetkan dengan deportasi akhir pekan lalu telah dinyatakan sebagai “organisasi teroris asing” oleh Trump setelah kembali ke Gedung Putih pada bulan Januari.
