Apple rolled out the iOS 17.5 update to the public on Monday, approximately two months after the release of iOS 17.4. The latest update includes security patches and a few new features for certain iPhone users. Having previously used iOS 17.5 as a beta and a release candidate, I discovered a new word game for Apple News Plus subscribers and more. To download the update, simply go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Update Now, and follow the onscreen instructions. Here’s a rundown of what’s new on your iPhone with iOS 17.5.
One of the new features in iOS 17.5 is the introduction of a puzzle game called Quartiles for Apple News Plus subscribers in the News app. This game challenges players to combine tiles with parts of words on them to form different words. Apple News Plus subscribers can access Quartiles by navigating to News > Following > Puzzles in the app.
Furthermore, iOS 17.5 also introduces puzzle leaderboards for Apple News Plus subscribers, allowing them to compare their daily puzzle scores with others. To enable this feature, go to Settings > News and toggle on Game Center under News+ Puzzles.
Apple News Plus subscribers can now enjoy an Offline Mode with iOS 17.5, which enables them to read their favorite publications offline. To activate Offline Mode, go to Settings > News and toggle on Automatic Downloads. Users can manage what content gets downloaded by adjusting the Download Options.
In addition, iOS 17.5 brings the capability for individuals in the EU to download apps from a developer’s website, along with a new set of Pride Collection wallpapers for iPhones. The update also introduces a Repair State mode for iPhones taken in for repairs, allowing users to prepare their devices for servicing without interruptions.
Other new features in iOS 17.5 include color-changing Podcast widgets, the ability to find recently played podcasts in Spotlight Search, a counter tool for reading goals in the Books app, and the detection of unknown third-party trackers moving with you. This update also includes bug fixes, security updates, and enhancements to Apple News.
