Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been released in the largest prisoner swap between Russia and the West since the Cold War. Along with Gershkovich, former US marine Paul Whelan, as well as several Russian opposition politicians and activists critical of the invasion of Ukraine, were among the 16 people freed by Russia. One of the most notable individuals returning to Moscow was Vadim Krasikov, who had been serving a life sentence in Germany for the assassination of a former Chechen rebel commander in a Berlin park.
