Dari Pengawas Pantai menjadi Jam Tangan Beracun

The GettyEPA team is currently working diligently to remove hazardous waste from beachfront properties that were devastated by the Palisades Fire. Will Rogers State Beach, known for its iconic lifeguard towers and surf culture, is now surrounded by the aftermath of the fires, with its parking lot serving as a sorting area for hazardous waste.

Environmental Protection Agency crews in hazmat suits are sorting through melted electric car batteries and other hazardous materials, aiming to complete the clean-up by 25 February. The fires generated an estimated 4.5 million tonnes of debris, presenting a significant challenge for the EPA.

Actor and environmentalist Bonnie Wright has expressed concerns about the close proximity of hazardous waste sorting to the beach, advocating for a safer location. The EPA acknowledges the dangers posed by burned vehicle batteries, which have the potential to reignite and explode even after the fires have been extinguished.

While the clean-up efforts have raised questions about water safety for swimming and surfing, officials are working to conduct thorough testing to ensure the ocean is safe for recreational activities. The scale of the clean-up from the fires is unprecedented, making it the largest in US history.

Despite the challenges and concerns, efforts are being made to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. With ongoing testing and clean-up operations, the hope is to restore the affected areas to their former beauty and ensure a safe environment for everyone.
