Bagaimana Sekutu Amerika mencoba untuk melindungi masa depan NATO dari Trump

One day ago, Tom Bateman, BBC State Department correspondent, reported on the Nato summit in Washington, where only one US president was present. However, the shadow of his predecessor, Donald Trump, loomed large over the meeting. While Joe Biden emphasized unity among Nato members, the lingering influence of Trump’s Nato-sceptic views added urgency and anxiety to the discussions.

Many world leaders at the summit seemed uneasy, with one Eastern European diplomat noting that Trump’s presence was felt in every conversation. The possibility of a second Trump term potentially bringing significant changes to the alliance raised concerns among attendees. Efforts were reportedly being made by Nato allies to manage relationships with Trump’s political circle and mitigate any potential damage.

French former Nato official Camille Grand expressed worry about a second Trump term, noting the lack of guardrails and experienced advisors around him. Some delegates at the summit shared concerns about the US commitment to Nato’s collective security principles under a Trump administration. Trump’s unpredictable stance on Nato, ranging from hostility to negotiating tactics, added to the uncertainty surrounding the alliance’s future.

There were conflicting views on Trump’s intentions regarding Nato, with some fearing a potential withdrawal while others believed he aimed to push European nations to increase their military spending. The Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” outlined a vision for transforming Nato’s role, emphasizing America’s nuclear deterrent while urging other members to bolster conventional forces.

Despite concerns about a second Trump term, efforts were being made to safeguard Nato’s future. Senator Chris Coons highlighted legislative measures to prevent unilateral withdrawal from Nato without Senate approval. Bipartisan efforts to provide military assistance to Ukraine and proposals to centralize arms supply coordination within Nato were seen as steps to ensure continued support for the alliance’s objectives.
