Reuters reports that the group of defendants accused of raping Gisèle Pelicot could collectively face over 600 years in jail. They come from various backgrounds and professions, including firefighters, lorry drivers, soldiers, security guards, a journalist, and a DJ. The group of 50 men, dubbed Monsieur-Tout-Le-Monde (Mr Everyman), are set to be sentenced next week after a trial that began in September.
The men all hail from towns within a 50km radius of the Pelicots’ village of Mazan. Some defense lawyers argue that their ordinariness could be used as a defense. The prosecution is seeking sentencing based on factors such as the frequency of visits to the Pelicot home, the nature of the sexual contact, and penetration.
The trial has revealed a staggering amount of evidence, as the assaults were filmed over almost a decade by Gisèle’s husband, Dominique Pelicot. He has admitted to all charges and implicated all 50 defendants as well. While many of the men deny the charges of aggravated rape, some argue that they were unaware of Gisèle’s inability to consent.
One man, Jean-Pierre M, is not accused of directly raping Gisèle but is considered Dominique Pelicot’s “disciple” for his involvement in drugging her. The defendants present a range of justifications and excuses for their actions, with some claiming manipulation and intimidation by Dominique Pelicot.
The trial has also delved into the personal histories of the defendants, many of whom have faced past trauma and abuse. Family members have been called to provide character statements, struggling to reconcile the accusations with the individuals they know. The emotional toll on loved ones is evident as they seek answers and understanding in the face of shocking revelations.
