Prajurit perempuan Ukraina sedang bertempur melawan Rusia dan seksisme.

Female members of the Ukrainian Army’s 128th Carpathian Mountain Assault Brigade are undergoing intense combat training in preparation to join the frontline in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine on July 15, 2023. Despite the long-standing perception of war and the military as a “man’s world,” women have been making significant contributions both on the battlefield and on the home front throughout history.

In Ukraine, the role of women in warfare is rapidly evolving, especially in the face of Russia’s invasion, which has motivated thousands of women to enlist in the military, taking on both combat and non-combat roles. The Ministry of Defense reported a 40% increase in female military personnel since 2021, with nearly 43,000 women currently serving.

However, female combatants in Ukraine still face challenges such as sexism, prejudice, and discrimination. They often feel the need to constantly prove themselves to their male counterparts. Combat medic Iryna Tsybukh highlighted the additional pressure women face on the battlefield due to their gender, noting the need to demonstrate their capabilities more so than men.

Over the past decade, the landscape for women in the Ukrainian military has shifted significantly, particularly following Russia’s actions in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. The number of female military personnel has more than tripled, with women now being able to serve in combat roles previously reserved for men.

Former journalist turned sniper Olena Bilozerska has been at the forefront of advocating for women in combat roles. Despite facing discrimination and challenges, she has risen through the ranks and become a symbol of courage and resilience in Ukraine.
