Ramaphosa selamat dari serangan Trump atas ‘genosida putih’

Article: ‘Turn the lights down’ – the unexpected turn of events in the Trump-Ramaphosa meeting

Donald Trump has emerged as a strong advocate for right-wing Afrikaner groups, challenging South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The US president’s surprise confrontation with Ramaphosa in the Oval Office was met with praise from groups like the Solidarity Movement, who had been actively lobbying the Trump administration. They saw it as an opportunity to bring attention to South Africa’s “enormous problems” on a global scale.

Ernst Roets, a prominent figure in the Afrikaner community, expressed his admiration for Trump’s actions, stating that he had made history by showcasing videos of controversial political figures and highlighting issues like farm murders.

Solidarity’s Jaco Kleynhans even went as far as suggesting that Trump deserved a Nobel Prize for shedding light on the farm murder crisis.

However, Afrikaner political columnist Pieter du Toit viewed the incident as a result of misinformation spread by certain South African activists to the American right-wing.

Despite the tension, Cyril Ramaphosa remained composed and brought in his team to address Trump’s claims of persecution against white individuals.

Many South Africans commended Ramaphosa for his handling of the situation, contrasting his demeanor with Trump’s more aggressive approach.

Critics of the right-wing groups argued that their actions lacked patriotism by pushing for a tougher stance against South Africa from the Trump administration.

They highlighted South Africa’s government of national unity, which consists of various parties working together to address the nation’s challenges, including high crime rates and unemployment.

For most South Africans, the unity displayed at the White House represented a collective effort to counter Trump’s rhetoric.

The government delegation included John Steenhuisen, South Africa’s top white politician and leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), who acknowledged the safety concerns in the country and emphasized the need for increased policing efforts.

Steenhuisen also refuted claims of mass exodus among white farmers, stating that many were committed to staying and contributing to South Africa’s progress.

Trump’s video spotlighted the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party and its leader Julius Malema, known for his controversial statements and calls for land nationalization.

Ramaphosa defended the existence of the EFF, citing democratic principles, while Steenhuisen highlighted the importance of unity in addressing the country’s challenges.

Overall, the meeting underscored the complexities of South African politics, with differing viewpoints and approaches towards national issues.

Trade unionist Zingiswa Losi echoed the sentiment that crime, rather than race, was a primary concern in South Africa.

Ramaphosa reiterated the country’s commitment to democracy and unity, invoking the legacy of Nelson Mandela as a symbol of reconciliation.

While some Afrikaners felt compelled to leave South Africa, Trump’s offer of refugee status to them has sparked debate and division within the country.

The meeting in the Oval Office was deemed “uncomfortable” by some, with differing opinions on the portrayal of South Africa’s challenges and priorities.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on finding common ground and solutions to move South Africa forward in a cohesive manner.

“Masalah di Afrika Selatan, bukan tentang ras, tetapi tentang kejahatan.”
