There are some who believe that Microsoft will extend the deadline at the last minute, but I wouldn’t count on it. The end-of-support date is clearly stated in the Microsoft Support document listing products retiring or reaching the end of support in 2025. If you’re hoping for an extension, you may be disappointed. The schedule is set by Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy, outlined on the Microsoft Lifecycle page, stating that Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025.
When a Windows version reaches its end-of-support date, the software will continue to function, but there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support. Customers are advised to migrate to the latest version of the product or service. However, this isn’t a feasible option for those running Windows 10 on hardware that doesn’t meet the stringent requirements for Windows 11 compatibility.
If you’re faced with Windows 10 PCs that don’t meet Windows 11 compatibility tests, you have five options:
1. Ignore the end-of-support deadline and continue running the unsupported operating system, which exposes you to security risks.
2. Purchase a new PC, although this may not be possible if you rely on Windows 10 for mission-critical software.
3. Switch to a Linux operating system or ChromeOS Flex, but compatibility requirements may still pose challenges.
4. Pay for Extended Security Updates (ESUs) from Microsoft, which will be available for up to three years after the end-of-support date for Windows 10.
5. Upgrade your ‘incompatible’ hardware to Windows 11 by following specific steps outlined in articles such as “How to upgrade your ‘incompatible’ Windows 10 PC to Windows 11.”
