Kerry Wan/ZDNET reports that Google’s Chrome browser for MacOS and Windows is set to introduce new Gemini-powered features, including an AI browsing assistant tailored to a user’s browsing habits. The announcement was made at Google I/O 2025.
The Gemini-in-Chrome feature will be available on May 21 for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US, as well as Chrome Beta, Dev, and Canary users. This feature aims to reorganize and display data from multiple browser tabs in a more coherent manner, enhanced with relevant Gemini-generated information.
During a demonstration, Google director Charmaine D’Silva showcased how Gemini-in-Chrome can assist in comparing products, answering questions, and providing additional context based on browsing activities. The goal is to merge search and AI within the browser experience.
Gemini Live’s capabilities include scrolling to specific content, generating derivatives of web pages, and verbally controlling the browsing experience. Google envisions Gemini-in-Chrome as a tool to significantly boost productivity by simplifying tasks.
Google has previously integrated AI features into Chrome to enhance accessibility and security. Gemini-in-Chrome will require users to activate the feature through a pop-up prompt, which may prompt additional vigilance to distinguish authentic prompts from potential imposters.
Gemini-in-Chrome focuses on text and images, excluding multimedia content like video and audio. The feature includes visual cues to indicate engagement with web content and aims to offer clarity and context for users.
