Bethesda’s game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is reportedly set to launch on Sony’s PlayStation 5 console. The game was initially announced for Xbox and PC during Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Direct event last month. However, a source familiar with Microsoft’s plans has informed The Verge that Bethesda is considering bringing the game to PS5 as well.
Microsoft is said to be adopting a new multi-platform approach for certain Xbox games. The company is currently evaluating which titles will remain exclusive to Xbox and which ones will be available on other platforms such as Nintendo Switch or PS5 in the future. Indiana Jones seems to be part of this new wave of multi-platform games.
While the Indiana Jones game will have an initial period of exclusivity on Xbox consoles, it is expected to be released for PS5 a few months later. Bethesda is tentatively targeting a December 2024 launch for the Xbox and PC versions of the game.
However, the exact timing and platform availability for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle may change, as Microsoft’s multi-platform approach for Xbox games is still being finalized. In recent months, Microsoft has been considering bringing certain Xbox exclusives to rival consoles such as PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Games like Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush have reportedly been under cross-platform consideration, and Microsoft has explored the possibility of bringing other Xbox games to non-Xbox platforms as well.
An announcement regarding Hi-Fi Rush for non-Xbox platforms is expected in the coming weeks, with datamined game assets hinting at a release for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, XboxEra has reported that Microsoft plans to bring Starfield to PS5 after the release of the game’s “Shattered Space” expansion for Xbox and PC.
It was revealed during the FTC v. Microsoft case last year that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was originally planned for multiple consoles. However, the deal was amended to make it an Xbox console exclusive after Microsoft acquired Bethesda. Pete Hines, Bethesda’s former head of global publishing, testified that potential delays in releasing the game on multiple consoles and dealing with licensors’ feedback led to the change.
While an Indiana Jones launch on PS5 would be surprising, there is reportedly an ongoing internal debate at Microsoft over which Xbox games should be brought to rival consoles. It appears that Microsoft has now decided to bring some Xbox titles to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, but the specifics of these decisions are still being worked out.
