In the past, becoming a “Leopard Slayer” required hunting and presenting a leopard to the local king, but as leopards became scarce, a financial contribution replaced the need for a live animal. The tradition dates back over four centuries and is a significant part of the identity of the people of Oguta.
The ceremonies involve three elaborate stages, including re-enactments of the hunt and spiritual rituals. Women are not allowed to participate, but they play a crucial role in the celebrations that follow, with feasting and traditional music and dancing.
The title of “Ogbuagu” is highly respected throughout Igboland and beyond, and those who achieve this status hold positions of honor and influence within the society. The Igbuu Society is an exclusive group, with strict criteria for membership.
