Mark Savage, Music Correspondent for Getty Images, highlights the upcoming Grammy Awards where two of the most iconic artists, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, will face off in the album of the year category for the first time since 2010. The ceremony, which is music’s biggest night, will feature performances from various artists such as Charli XCX, Shakira, and Stevie Wonder, with an in memoriam tribute to Quincy Jones.
The big question of the night is whether Beyoncé will finally win album of the year after previously losing in the category four times. Billie Eilish is currently the favorite to win with her album “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” followed by Charli XCX’s “Brat” and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department.”
In addition to the album of the year category, the Grammy Awards also feature other major prizes such as record of the year and best new artist. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is a front-runner for record of the year, while Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga’s “Die With A Smile” is a strong contender for song of the year.
The Grammy Awards, voted on by over 13,000 members of the Recording Academy, recognize music released between September 2023 and August 2024. The winners are only revealed at the ceremony, which takes place in LA and runs for a staggering eight hours.
The Beatles, despite breaking up 55 years ago, are nominated for two prizes this year, showcasing the Grammys’ penchant for rewarding legendary artists. If they win, only surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will receive trophies due to the Grammys’ eligibility rules.
