Elit Hitam Afrika Selatan Kecewa pada Presiden yang Mereka Dukung

Several years ago, Cyril Ramaphosa became president of South Africa, bringing hope and optimism to the country’s rising Black professionals. Many saw him as a poised businessman with intellectual depth, a stark contrast to the previous administration that had criticized Black professionals as elitists complicit in white economic dominance. However, as voters prepare for the upcoming election, Black professionals pose a significant threat to Mr. Ramaphosa and his party, the African National Congress (ANC).

Despite defecting during Jacob Zuma’s scandal-ridden tenure, many professionals returned to the ANC in 2019, believing in Mr. Ramaphosa’s ability to combat corruption and revive the economy. Their return helped the party maintain a majority, but now, some Black professionals feel disillusioned. They believe Mr. Ramaphosa has not taken decisive action to address economic challenges and corruption within the ANC.

Although Black professionals only make up 7% of the Black population, their influence is significant. They are typically well-educated, work white-collar jobs, and have the financial means to afford necessities. However, they are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the government’s performance, feeling the weight of widespread poverty and government failures in providing basic services.

Critics argue that Mr. Ramaphosa lacks decisiveness, while supporters commend his leadership style for bringing political stability to South Africa. As the ANC faces challenges from opposition parties in the upcoming election, Black professionals are being courted by various political factions. Some are starting to question the ANC’s promises and are exploring alternative options to address their concerns and aspirations.
