Ten years ago, architect Malcolm Wildeboer found the perfect spot for his client’s future house on a remote plot of land in Ontario. Surrounded by hemlocks and with a view of a tree-ringed lake, Wildeboer envisioned a contemporary structure that would blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. The client shared Wildeboer’s passion for the outdoors and the project focused on protecting the trees on the property.
Working with Wildeboer and design studio ACDO, the client described a vision of a materials-forward house inspired by traditional lodge retreats but with a modern touch. The 10,000 square foot house features two wings, three levels, and a palette of concrete, soapstone, and oak. The living and dining area, with its 24-foot-high ceilings, is central to the home’s public wing and perfect for hosting dinner parties.
The kitchen, adorned with wire-brushed oak cabinetry and emerald quartzite, sits opposite the dining area. The house also features unique stone varieties in the bathrooms and office, creating a strong visual impact. Each guest bedroom is designed with different configurations and thoughtful details to ensure a comfortable stay.
The lower level of the house is dedicated to entertainment, with a cozy cinema and a walk-in wine-storage room. Stone elements are incorporated throughout the interiors to connect the space to nature and create a harmonious atmosphere. “Kamu dapatkan hasil kasar itu,” kata Chan, “seperti yang kamu temukan di pegunungan.”
Meskipun klien dan keluarganya tidak tinggal di tempat liburan mereka sepanjang tahun, mereka tidak mengklasifikasikannya sebagai tempat tinggal liburan. “Hati dan pikiran kita tidak pernah meninggalkan rumah,” katanya, mencatat bahwa persimpangan keindahan, fungsionalitas, dan hubungan dengan lingkungan sekitar sepenuhnya memenuhi keinginan mereka untuk berbagi properti dengan orang-orang yang mereka sayangi.
