JAKARTA – The graduation of one UGM student had to be represented by her parents. This was because the student passed away in an accident before her thesis defense.

The late student from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) was named Dewi Sekar Rumpaka. She was a Forestry Faculty student who was accepted through the Excellent Student Search for the Poor program (PBUTM).

Dewi graduated from UGM with a GPA of 3.86 and obtained cum laude honors. Unfortunately, Dewi’s presence could only be represented by a portrait of her in a 40×60 cm frame carried by her parents, Jono and Ngadinah.

A touching moment enveloped the bachelor and applied bachelor graduation ceremony at UGN on February 21, 2024. The diploma was directly handed over by UGM Rector Prof Ova Emilia to Jono and Ngadinah, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry.

The diploma handover process from the rector to Dewi’s parents, uploaded on UGM’s official Instagram account, has been liked by 82,992 other Instagram users since it was posted 19 hours ago.

Her thesis titled “Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Forest Gecko Vocalizations in the Forest Area of Tahawa Village, Central Kalimantan” received an A grade based on the assessment of the examiners.

As a form of appreciation for the late student’s dedication to research, the faculty plans to rewrite the thesis she composed for publication in a scientific journal.
