Wanita Kenya Menolak Kehamilan dan Memilih Sterilisasi

Nelly Naisula Sironka has never desired children and made the irreversible decision to undergo tubal ligation, permanently closing the door on motherhood at 28 years old. She feels liberated by her choice, ensuring her future is her own. The procedure blocks the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy and is commonly known as “getting your tubes tied”. Despite societal norms in Kenya, Sironka credits her father for encouraging her focus on education and independence. She found inspiration in feminist literature and decided to undergo sterilization after saving up enough money and finding a stable job. The procedure cost her 30,000 Kenyan shillings at a private hospital. Sironka felt compelled to act due to the erosion of women’s rights globally and the fear of losing control over her own body. She is not alone in choosing a child-free life, challenging traditional expectations of womanhood. Other women, like interior designer Muthoni Gitau, have shared their tubal ligation journeys openly on social media. Gitau’s decision was driven by her desire to live life on her own terms and she faced resistance from doctors before finally finding support. Despite challenges, these women are confident in their choices and believe they can contribute to the world in many other ways besides raising children. Saya bersyukur bisa hidup di generasi di mana pilihan adalah sesuatu yang ada.
