‘Simbol perlawanan’: Lumumba, pahlawan Kongo yang tewas sebelum masa jayanya | Berita Sejarah

“Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo – In June 1960, Patrice Lumumba, the 34-year-old prime minister of the newly liberated Congo, delivered a powerful speech at the Palace of the Nation in Leopoldville. His words, challenging the legacy of slavery and colonialism, stirred controversy among European dignitaries, including King Baudouin of Belgium. Lumumba’s vision of a united and independent Congo, free from foreign influence, resonated with many, but his life was tragically cut short just six months later.

Decades after his assassination, Lumumba remains a symbol of African resistance. Kasereka Lukombola, an 85-year-old resident of Goma, vividly recalls the shock and sorrow he felt upon hearing of Lumumba’s death. He blames the Belgian colonists for plotting against Lumumba, who dared to speak out against racial segregation and exploitation.

Tumsifu Akram, a Congolese researcher, believes Lumumba was targeted by Western powers seeking to control Congo’s vast natural resources. The complex political landscape of the time, marked by internal strife and external interference, ultimately led to Lumumba’s downfall.

Despite differing opinions on Lumumba’s legacy, his impact on Congolese history is undeniable. Lukombola, who participated in the country’s early elections and witnessed its tumultuous path to independence, laments the missed opportunities that followed Lumumba’s death. Others, like Grace Bahati, question Lumumba’s decisions and their long-term consequences for the country.

As the debate over Lumumba’s legacy continues, one thing remains clear: his vision of a proud and prosperous Congo, free from outside control, still resonates with many today.”
