My high school English teacher emphasized the importance of taking notes while reading a book, stating that if you don’t take notes, you haven’t truly read the book. Nowadays, I find it impossible to read without jotting down my thoughts. However, using the Notes app on my device can be cumbersome and disorganized. The Kindle Scribe, with its note-taking capabilities, promised to solve this issue, but the original model fell short for me.

The second-generation Kindle Scribe has made improvements, allowing you to write directly on a wider range of ebook pages, convert handwriting to text, and summarize notes in its built-in notebooks. However, with a higher price tag of $399.99, it needs to deliver on these features to justify the cost, especially since the original model is still available for $60 less with the latest software update.

While the Kindle Scribe offers a spacious and sharp display, the note-taking capabilities still lag behind competitors. The Active Canvas tool allows you to write notes directly on ebook pages, but there are limitations in viewing and exporting these notes. Marking up PDFs is more intuitive, but there are still restrictions on searching within markups and sideloaded PDFs.

The Kindle Scribe’s new AI features for built-in notebooks, such as summarizing notes and refining handwriting, require an internet connection and have limitations in tying notes to ebooks or PDFs. While the AI summary feature is helpful, the handwriting conversion feature is slow and limited in functionality.

Overall, the Kindle Scribe offers a solid writing experience with its Premium Pen stylus and resizable text boxes. However, the note-taking capabilities still fall short compared to competitors like Kobo and Onyx, making it a frustrating experience at times. With improvements in software updates and additional features, the Kindle Scribe has the potential to be a worthwhile investment for avid readers and note-takers.
