We all strive to brew the perfect cup of coffee each morning, but it’s easy to get caught up in the details of scales, tampers, and other brewing tools. However, avoiding a few common mistakes can ensure that your freshly brewed coffee hits the spot. Recently, I spoke with Sarina Prabasi, the founder of the Buunni roastery and trio of coffeehouses in northern Manhattan, to uncover some simple mistakes that people often overlook when brewing coffee at home.
Buunni specializes in ethically sourced beans from various regions in Ethiopia, known for their fruity, floral, and fragrant flavors. Prabasi and her husband, who relocated from Ethiopia, bring a focus on hospitality and high-quality coffee to their business. In addition to their sourced beans, they also create custom blends using beans from around the world.
As a micro-roaster and board member of the Specialty Coffee Association, Prabasi shared some tips on how to make adjustments for a better cup of coffee. She emphasized the importance of enjoying the coffee-making process and not taking it too seriously.
Here are a few key tips from Prabasi:
1. Avoid washing your coffee maker with detergent too often, as even a small residue can affect the flavor of your coffee.
2. Buy coffee in smaller quantities to avoid drinking stale coffee that has lost its flavor.
3. Start by adjusting one element at a time when brewing coffee, such as the water-to-coffee ratio.
4. Use filtered water instead of tap water to improve the taste of your coffee.
5. Pay attention to the aroma of your coffee, as a lack of smell indicates staleness.
6. Look for organic coffee, as it is often of higher quality and free from harmful pesticides.
7. Take the time to savor your coffee instead of always rushing through it, as it can be a moment to relax and connect with others.
By following these tips and making simple adjustments, you can ensure that your morning cup of coffee is always satisfying and enjoyable.
