Wicked is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2024, bringing to the big screen a Tony Award-winning musical that has captivated theater kids for years. With a star-studded cast including Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, director Jon M. Chu has a lot to live up to in this adaptation. However, online criticism has plagued the film since the release of the first images and footage, with complaints about the washed-out colors and the decision to split the musical into two parts.
The first part of Wicked follows the origin story of the Wicked Witch and her friendship with Glinda at Shiz University. While Grande shines as the self-obsessed Glinda, Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is more serious and subdued, deviating from the character’s traditional snarky wit. Chu’s choices, including the dreary color palette and cramped cinematography, detract from the high-energy and spectacle that fans expect from Wicked. Despite these flaws, there are moments of brilliance in the film, particularly in the performances of Erivo, Grande, and Bailey.
Overall, Wicked: Part 1 is a mixed bag, with some standout moments and performances, but ultimately falling short of fans’ high expectations.
