Representation is crucial. It’s not sufficient for our beloved TV shows to include actors of color. We also need diverse representation behind the scenes to ensure that the stories and experiences of marginalized groups are portrayed authentically, with depth, and with respect. Netflix offers a plethora of fantastic shows, ranging from intense dramas to light-hearted comedies, all created, produced, written, or directed by Black artists. Recognizing and celebrating these creatives is essential. Here are some of our favorite Netflix shows with talented Black creators at the helm, in no particular order.
1. Top Boy: Created by Ronan Bennett, this gripping drama originally set in East London follows the lives of drug dealers Dushane and Sully, portrayed by Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson. The series was revived by Drake in 2019, with a new gang leader played by Micheal Ward.
2. Dear White People: Based on the award-winning film by Justin Simien, this show follows a group of Black college students navigating life at an Ivy League school, addressing systemic racism with humor and insight.
3. When They See Us: Directed by Ava DuVernay, this powerful miniseries examines the wrongful convictions of the Central Park Five, shedding light on the flaws in our justice system.
4. Family Reunion: Created by Meg DeLoatch, this heartwarming sitcom follows a family from Seattle as they move to Georgia, focusing on the love and laughter shared between family members.
5. Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices: This delightful show features readings of children’s books by Black celebrities, aiming to showcase stories that celebrate the Black experience.
6. She’s Gotta Have It: Spike Lee’s series follows the life of Nola Darling, a nonmonogamous artist navigating relationships, politics, and art in Brooklyn.
7. Yasuke: This original anime series is inspired by the story of a 16th-century Black samurai, offering a moody and engrossing tale set in a mystical feudal Japan.
8. Zero: A fresh take on the superhero genre, this series follows a young man with the power to become invisible as he navigates life in Milan.
9. JIVA!: A dance drama set in Durban, South Africa, following a dancer as she prepares for a dance competition.
10. All American: Based on the life of NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger, this drama follows a high school football player recruited to play for Beverly Hills High.
11. Everything Now: A teen comedy-drama following a girl’s journey of self-discovery after leaving a rehabilitation facility.
12. Colin in Black & White: A limited series co-created by Colin Kaepernick and Ava DuVernay, exploring Kaepernick’s journey to activism through his teenage experiences.
