Jason Hiner/ZDNETI absolutely adore my AirPods Max. The sound quality is exceptional, they are a pleasure to use, and they have become an essential part of my daily routine. However, I can’t help but feel disappointed after Apple’s recent update – or lack thereof. Why didn’t Apple take this opportunity to bring the AirPods Max up to the level of innovation we have come to expect? A few new colors and the addition of USB-C charging just don’t cut it.
Weight and comfort issues have been a persistent problem with the AirPods Max since their release in December 2020. At 13.6 ounces, they are quite heavy, and prolonged use can become uncomfortable. It’s surprising that Apple hasn’t made any efforts to make the headphones lighter or more comfortable, especially considering the premium price tag. Competitors have managed to address these issues, so why hasn’t Apple?
In addition to the weight problem, the AirPods Max also lack improvements in overall comfort and ergonomics. Users often experience discomfort due to heat buildup during long listening sessions. Apple could have introduced better heat management or redesigned the ear cushions for improved airflow to make the headphones more comfortable. Lighter materials or a redesign of the ear cushions could have made a significant difference in the user experience.
While Apple has made advancements in AI-driven features with the Apple Watch, the lack of health sensors in the AirPods Max is surprising. Rumors suggest that AirPods Pro 3 may have health tracking capabilities, but the AirPods Max offer nothing in this regard. With their larger form factor, there was ample space for advanced sensors and health-focused innovations that Apple failed to explore.
Apple’s reluctance to license third-party health technology has also hindered the potential of the AirPods Max. By avoiding collaborations and legal battles, Apple missed an opportunity to incorporate cutting-edge health tech into its flagship headphones, limiting their capabilities in health monitoring, wellness, and productivity.
The lack of significant improvements in battery life, charging capabilities, and comfort enhancements in the AirPods Max refresh is disappointing. The addition of USB-C charging is a step forward, but wireless charging and MagSafe compatibility are still missing. With the headphones’ larger size, Apple could have explored innovative charging technologies to position the AirPods Max at the forefront of the market.
Despite improvements in noise cancellation and sound quality, the AirPods Max’s premium price tag may not be justified without substantial upgrades in health-related and AI-driven features. Competitors like Sony, Bose, and Master & Dynamic are innovating faster, introducing features that Apple could have incorporated into the AirPods Max to stay ahead in the market.
In conclusion, the new AirPods Max update falls short of expectations, with minimal changes and a lack of groundbreaking features. Apple missed opportunities to address weight and comfort issues, incorporate health sensors, and improve sustainability. Without major innovations, the premium price of the AirPods Max is difficult to justify, especially as competitors offer similar or more advanced features at lower prices.
