Annie Makeeva embarked on a solo trip to Vietnam in December 2022, never expecting to be sexually assaulted by two violent “incels” – men who blame women for their own inability to find a sexual partner. The incident occurred on the first day of her holiday, as she cycled into the remote Cat Tien National Park in the south of the country.
Despite initially mistaking the men for fellow tourists, Annie was attacked by them as she ventured into the jungle. She managed to fend them off and sought help from the authorities. The men were eventually detained by the police but the consequences of their actions remain unclear.
The experience left Annie traumatized and wary of her surroundings, impacting her daily life and sense of security. Determined to raise awareness about male violence towards women, she has been advocating for others’ safety and well-being. The incident has prompted her to delve into the perpetrators’ backgrounds and motivations, revealing disturbing and misogynistic behavior on their social media accounts.
Annie’s courage in speaking out about her ordeal serves as a reminder of the pervasive issue of violence against women and the importance of vigilance and solidarity in combating it.
