‘Aku takut, tapi aku akan terus melangkah’: Warga Venezuela terjebak antara harapan dan ketakutan | Berita Protes

Caracas, Venezuela – Dark clouds loomed over the usually bustling streets of Petare as Eglle Camacho heard a steady clanging sound. The noise grew louder, prompting people to emerge from their homes armed with kitchen utensils, banging pots and pans. Camacho joined them as they marched towards Caracas’ city center, protesting what they believed to be fraudulent election results favoring President Nicolas Maduro. Despite capturing the day’s events in photos, Camacho deleted them out of fear of government retaliation against opposition supporters.

The aftermath of the July 28 presidential election saw widespread protests and clashes between opposition groups and security forces. Many were outraged by the discrepancy between the official results, which declared Maduro the winner, and alternative tallies that indicated a landslide victory for opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez. The government’s failure to provide detailed voting results only fueled suspicions of electoral fraud.

Amidst the turmoil, a diverse cross-section of Venezuelan society took to the streets to demand transparency and fair elections. Working-class areas like Petare, once strongholds of Chavismo, now echoed with voices of dissent against the socialist government’s failed promises and economic mismanagement. The country’s economic collapse, marked by hyperinflation and mass emigration, has left many disillusioned with Maduro’s regime.

Despite the risks of repression and violence, protesters like Marta Diaz continued to rally for the release of detained activists and for a democratic outcome. The government’s announcement of high-security “reeducation camps” for protesters only heightened fears of further crackdowns. As the nation teetered on the brink of uncertainty, Venezuelans grappled with a future marred by political turmoil and economic hardship.
