TOKYO – Toyota GR Yaris 2024 was officially introduced by Toyota at the Tokyo Auto Salon. There are several significant changes, one of which is the option of an automatic transmission.

Previously, the Toyota GR Yaris was only available with a manual transmission. Just like other exclusive models such as the GR Corolla, Honda Civic Type R, or Civic Si.

Now, Toyota offers options to consumers who still want to have a sporty car with comfort. Namely, using an eight-speed automatic transmission with new torque conversion.

The new gearbox in the Toyota GR Yaris is also special, called the Direct Automatic Transmission. This is based on an optimized automatic torque converter for faster gear shifts and has specifically tuned gear shifting logic for track use.

So, even though the transmission is automatic, the racing sensation in the Toyota GR Yaris will not diminish. Because, Toyota has tested the durability of this gearbox in the Super Taikyu endurance racing series and the Japanese Rally Championship.

In addition to the new gearbox, the GR Yaris also received several improvements on all sides.

This “Circuit” specification is obtained through an enhanced cooling package, especially additional radiators, intercooler sprays, and a redesigned intake system.

This car will also have a special cooler for its gearbox. Both coolers can be seen on the side intake. Furthermore, the automatic transmission in the GR Yaris only adds about 18 kilograms to the vehicle’s weight.

The increase in body rigidity and suspension will support the increase in power from the three-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Toyota not only tuned the engine of the GR Yaris 2024, but also strengthened the valve train, used new exhaust valves, increased direct injection pressure, installed new air pressure sensors, and redesigned lightweight pistons.

As a result, the car’s power increased by 19 HP and an additional 30 Nm of torque. So the maximum power is 280 HP and 390 Nm of torque. Finally, the GR Yaris received an exterior and interior facelift. The front bumper has a more aggressive style to accommodate the extra cooling.

The interior has also been completely redesigned to be more driver-focused. One of them is the use of a 12.3-inch meter cluster adopted from the GR Corolla.
Seeing the high interest in the previous version of the GR Yaris when it was brought to Indonesia, it is possible that this car will also enter the local market. This car is planned to be marketed in Europe in early 2024.
