“I think social innovations in religious and neighborly life must be discussed in order to build a culture of tolerance,” Setyabudi remarked in an online discussion monitored here on Friday.
He emphasized that in a pluralistic society like Indonesia, an attitude of tolerance is a basic principle in promoting welfare in community life.
“In the midst of our society, which is increasingly pluralistic, the level of tolerance needs to be increased so that it truly encourages harmony,” he stressed.
Setyabudi said that social innovations can be formed in society through open dialogue that prioritizes the interests of each group while still respecting differences.
In addition, this social innovation needs to be supported by good leadership from local religious leaders who understand the values of difference and tolerance.
“Therefore, it is necessary to build an open dialogue through digital platforms or other platforms so that each group can convey its religious interests,” he affirmed.
Setyabudi cautioned that social conflict may arise if community groups prioritize their interests over respect for other groups.
“Therefore, tolerance and respect for other people or groups with different moral, religious, and ethical views need to be implemented,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Head of the BRIN Religious and Belief Research Center, Aji Sofanudin, underlined the importance of a moderate approach to religious life as a strategy to realize a peaceful and coexistent life in a pluralistic society.
Sofanudin affirmed that religious moderation is a relevant solution to build harmony among religious communities and prevent various issues of radicalism and extremism.
“Religious moderation is still a relevant strategy to address the issues of radicalism and extremism so as to encourage harmony among religious communities,” he remarked.
