Bristol Rovers play in League One, the third tier competition. Many regret the decision of the Indonesian national team defender. However, there is a reason behind this decision.

Elkan Baggott doesn’t want to aim too high and it’s not a big deal for him to drop down a competition tier. In Bristol Rovers, he believes he can get an even better environment.

“I have had some conversations with the manager. The team here plays, the environment, is something that I think is very suitable for me,” said Baggott, quoted from the club’s official website.

“The setup is very good, so I think it gives me the best chance to perform at the highest level I can,” added the 21-year-old defender.

With Ipswich Town in the 2023/2024 season, Baggott did not get regular playing opportunities. In this season’s Championship Division, he has not been given a chance to play at all.

Baggott has only played four times. Three times he played the full 90 minutes, and once he came on as a substitute for 30 minutes. He contributed one goal.

As a graduate of the Ipswich Town U-21 squad, this is not the first time Baggott has been loaned out. In 2022/2023, he joined Gillingham FC in League Two, and made 19 appearances during the half season.

In the second half, it was Cheltenham’s turn to borrow Baggott in League One. But they only gave him one playing opportunity.

Being young, Baggott is looking for more playing time at the club level. Especially since he is a key player in the Indonesian national team that has just returned from the 2023 Asian Cup.

In 2024, Baggott is also aiming for a spot in the Indonesian U-23 squad that will compete in the U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar.
