Ulasan ‘Maria’: Angelina Jolie Membakar Biopik Opera

Chilean director Pablo Larraín completes his informal trilogy of biopic melodramas with Maria, a film about the iconic Greek-American opera soprano Maria Callas. While not as cohesive as his previous works on Princess Diana and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Maria shines with standout performances, particularly from Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Set during the final week of Callas’ life, the film explores her isolation and struggles with regaining her voice, all while grappling with her fading fame and reliance on medication. Larraín’s storytelling blends shifting textures and timelines, with stunning cinematography capturing the wistful essence of Callas’ world. The film delves into Callas’ past, including her tumultuous affair with Aristotle Onassis, portrayed with venomous charisma by Haluk Bilginer. Central performances from Jolie, as well as supporting actors Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher, anchor the film with intimate, loving perspectives on the legendary vocalist. Maria ultimately succeeds in exploring the complexities of fame and the human experience, thanks to Larraín’s visionary direction and the stellar cast’s performances.
