Microsoft’s offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10 for users of supported previous versions officially ended on September 20, 2023. Despite this, some users have reported success in activating Windows 10 on hardware originally licensed for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
While upgrades to Windows 10 may still work on older hardware, activation might not be successful. Users may experience limitations such as the inability to personalize the interface or access certain updates without proper activation.
To upgrade an old PC to Windows 10, ensure your current version of Windows is activated, check for driver updates, back up your data, and temporarily uninstall certain software that may interfere with the upgrade process. Then, visit the Download Windows 10 webpage to begin the upgrade process.
Depending on your needs, you can choose to upgrade directly using the Media Creation Tool or create separate installation media. Follow the prompts to complete the upgrade, and remember that a Windows 10 digital license is tied to a specific device, allowing for reinstallation in the future.
