Dapatkah minum aspirin setiap hari mencegah kanker? | Berita Kesehatan

Aspirin has long been recognized as a reliable pain reliever, but new research suggests it may also have potential in fighting cancer.

Past studies have hinted at a connection between aspirin use and improved cancer survival rates, and a recent study published in Nature explains why. However, it is important to note that aspirin is not a cure for cancer and comes with risks such as an increased chance of internal bleeding.

So, how exactly does aspirin work to prevent cancer from spreading, and what does this mean for future treatment possibilities?

What have studies revealed regarding aspirin use and cancer?

Recent studies have shed light on how aspirin, a commonly used pain reliever, could potentially inhibit the spread of cancer. However, it remains uncertain whether this effect would be consistent across all types of cancer.

Researchers have been investigating this relationship for many years. The initial clinical study in 1988 showed a significant reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer with regular aspirin use, though the exact mechanism was not clear at the time.

A new study from the University of Cambridge has provided more insights into this matter. It has identified how aspirin might prevent the spread of cancer, a process called metastasis.

Metastasis is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths, where cancer cells break away from the original tumor and attempt to establish themselves in other parts of the body.

As these rogue cancer cells circulate, aspirin may enhance the body’s natural defense mechanisms, preventing the cancer cells from colonizing other organs.

How does aspirin inhibit the spread of cancer?

The effectiveness of aspirin against cancer lies in its impact on the body’s immune system, which consists of a complex network of cells and proteins that protect against infections, diseases, and harmful agents.

When cancer cells escape from a tumor and enter the bloodstream, the immune system, particularly T-cells (a type of white blood cell), normally detects and eliminates them. However, platelets, small cell fragments in the blood responsible for clotting, can interfere with this process.

Cancer cells exploit platelets by triggering a response similar to an injury. When platelets encounter free-floating cancer cells, they rush to cover them, forming a shield that hinders the immune system from identifying and attacking the cancer cells. Moreover, platelets release signals that suppress T-cells, impeding their function.

Aspirin disrupts these deceptive tactics of cancer by reducing the production of a molecule that platelets use to suppress immune activity. By weakening platelets, aspirin allows T-cells to resume their role in recognizing and destroying cancer cells before they can develop into new tumors.

How might aspirin be utilized in the fight against cancer?

The study proposes that aspirin could be beneficial after treatments like surgery, where tumors have been surgically removed.

However, caution is advised against using aspirin immediately as a cancer treatment without further research. The painkiller carries potential risks, such as internal bleeding, as it weakens platelets’ ability to facilitate blood clotting.

Aspirin blocks a molecule that encourages platelets to clump together, thinning the blood and elevating the risk of uncontrolled bleeding. This poses a significant danger in areas such as the stomach, where aspirin can irritate the lining and cause ulcers, as well as the brain, where it increases the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke if a blood vessel bursts.

Additionally, since the study was conducted on mice and not humans, further confirmation of its effects on cancer spread is necessary before recommending it as a treatment option.

“Our research provides a molecular explanation for observations from clinical studies, but proper clinical validation is still necessary,” stated Rahul Roychoudhuri, a professor at Cambridge’s Department of Pathology and a participant in the Nature study.

Several clinical trials are ongoing to determine the most suitable candidates for aspirin therapy and its efficacy against specific cancer types.

Has aspirin been utilized in combating diseases previously?

Individuals with a high genetic predisposition to cancer, such as those with Lynch syndrome, are currently advised to take aspirin preventively in countries like Australia and the UK.

Since the 1980s, aspirin has also been prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in high-risk individuals by impeding platelet-induced clot formation that could obstruct blood flow to the heart or brain.

Does this signify a breakthrough in cancer treatment is imminent?

While aspirin shows promise in slowing or preventing cancer spread, it does not eradicate tumors entirely.

Efforts are underway to identify biomarkers in the blood and platelet activity that could aid in early cancer detection among at-risk individuals.

“This would enable timely administration of aspirin while minimizing unnecessary exposure for those who do not need it,” noted Paola Patrignani, a pharmacology professor at Gabriele d’Annunzio University in Italy.

Experts believe these findings could pave the way for the development of targeted therapies that offer the benefits of aspirin without its adverse effects.

“Our discoveries open up possibilities for developing more focused therapies that could potentially deliver the benefits without the side effects of aspirin,” Roychoudhuri remarked.

Research is ongoing to investigate whether other anti-platelet drugs, like clopidogrel, may offer similar benefits, with completion expected in the next three to five years.

Despite the progress, there is still more research required before aspirin’s potential as a cancer treatment can be fully realized.
