Apa itu ‘Mimpi di atas Bantal’, permainan Palestina tentang Nakba? | Berita Al-Nakba

Can a video game evoke the weight of history? That’s the ambitious aim of a new pseudo-3D stealth adventure game titled “Dreams on a Pillow”, created by Palestinian game developers. Inspired by the events of the 1948 Nakba or “catastrophe”, which saw the ethnic cleansing of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes in what is now Israel, the game is set to be released in 2026. In a time when Palestinians are cautiously optimistic about a recent ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel for Gaza, the launch of this game raises questions about its creators, intentions, and impact.

Rasheed Abueideh, the game’s director and designer based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, describes “Dreams on a Pillow” as a potential masterpiece. His previous game, “Liyla and the Shadows of War”, based on the 2014 Israeli offensive in Gaza, was a major success. Abueideh aims to convey a heavy story through gameplay that resonates with players, shedding light on the historical context and personal experiences of displacement during the Nakba.

Despite facing challenges in securing traditional funding, Abueideh turned to crowdfunding platform LaunchGood, where the game exceeded its funding goal. The game’s development will explore the legend of Omm, a young mother fleeing the Tantura massacre in 1948, offering players a glimpse into the emotional and mental toll of the Nakba period. Through innovative game mechanics, the player will navigate Omm’s journey, grappling with the psychological effects of trauma and displacement.

“Dreams on a Pillow” marks a departure from Abueideh’s previous work, offering a unique gameplay experience that delves into Palestinian culture, history, and the impact of the Nakba. By weaving together storytelling and game mechanics, the game aims to challenge misconceptions about Palestine and highlight its rich heritage before the events of 1948.
