Bencana kapal tanker Rusia dan kebocoran minyak di Selat Kerch: Apa artinya | Berita Lingkungan

Two Russian ships were damaged in stormy weather over the weekend, causing a spill of approximately 3,700 tons (3,350 tonnes) of low-grade fuel into the Kerch Strait in Russian-occupied Crimea, as reported by Russian state media on Monday. This incident has raised concerns about a potential environmental disaster in the biodiversity hotspot. The vessels were transporting around 9,200 tons (8,300 tonnes) of mazut, a heavy, low-quality oil product commonly used in power plants, to deliver fuel for the Russian Navy amidst the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Unfortunately, the bad weather caused the tankers to break apart on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least one crew member. Environmental experts have warned of the challenges in containing the spill, with videos showing oil-slicked birds and blackened shorelines. Ukraine, which claims the territory, has accused Russia of violating sea regulations by using outdated vessels and is calling for international sanctions.

The spill has contaminated approximately 60km (37 miles) of shoreline, particularly impacting the town of Anapa in the Krasnodar region. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency due to the significant number of bird deaths. The incident has highlighted the risks posed by the Russian “shadow fleet” of vessels, which are often outdated and operate outside maritime laws. The affected area is home to various species of dolphins and birds, which have already been impacted by pollution from previous disasters.

Efforts to mitigate the environmental damage and clean up the affected areas are underway, but the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia may hinder a swift and coordinated response. The spill serves as a warning of the larger issues posed by the shadow fleet vessels and the potential consequences for the ecosystem in the region.
